Anxiety & Panic AttacksAnxiety is a natural survival mechanism that motivates us to act
We all need to experience some degree of anxiety at times; it’s a natural survival mechanism that motivates us to act. It would be unnatural not to feel some of its symptoms – a racing pulse, dry mouth, knotted stomach – just before a big speech or exam, for instance. It locks and focuses our attention to help us achieve our best.
But excessive anxiety can be problematic and become as disabling as any chronic physical illness.
Excessive anxiety may develop gradually, from loneliness perhaps after a loss or move, or adverse life changes resulting from illness or feeling overloaded with too much responsibility. Or it might occur suddenly after being involved in a car crash for instance or being a victim of a violent attack.
How you respond to the anxious physical sensations, emotions and thoughts is especially significant in controlling the level of anxiety that you feel–if you tend to blame yourself when setbacks happen, feel like your whole life is ruined and believe the setback will go on for ever this will exacerbate your anxiety.
But anxiety is not something all-powerful and inexplicable. It can be managed, when you know how.
And you’re not alone; it is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health problem*
Do you have a nagging feeling of foreboding, suffer panic attacks or phobias?
These along with excessive fear and worry are all forms of out of control anxiety.

Do you spend a lot of time worrying about future events, asking “What if?” and coming up with a whole variety of dreadful outcomes for yourself or your loved ones?
Do you have repetitive negative thoughts running through your mind that you may not even notice? – “I’ll never cope”, “it’s going to be awful”, “I’m going to be late, my boss will sack me!”
Do you have a nagging feeling of foreboding, suffer panic attacks or phobias?
These along with excessive fear and worry are all forms of out of control anxiety.
HUMAN GIVENS THERAPY
As a Human Givens therapist – MHGI, HG.Dip.P. – I will immediately help you bring down your arousal and stress levels using simple relaxation techniques, in a therapy setting where you can feel safe, so you can start to use your imagination more positively to rehearse successful outcomes instead of bad ones.
I will take time to listen and to understand your emotions but we won’t dwell on them because it’s not necessary to feel worse before you can feel better.
We will de-traumatise phobias, panic attacks or traumatic memories using the Rewind technique, a straightforward, non-invasive method that doesn’t require you to disclose any detail about your experiences.
Together we will use a mix of behavioural, cognitive and interpersonal techniques to help you find better ways to respond to stress. You can then start to meet your emotional needs – such as for security, connection, status – which extreme anxiety always interferes with, in healthy and satisfying ways.
We will even rehearse putting this into practice at the end of each session; I always aim for you to leave feeling better than when you walked in.
You can view my profile – MHGI, HG.Dip.P. – on the Human Givens Therapist Register here and be assured that I work in accordance with the Human Givens Code of Conduct and Ethical Foundations which you can see here. I have full professional indemnity insurance.
You can find out how Human Givens differs from other therapy approaches here.
